There is a captivating background to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just over the border from nearby Thailand, where casino gambling is not legal. Eight gambling halls are situated in a relatively small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime location, a 3 to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to more than 12.5 million, and there are a few limitations constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; however, financial sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are supposedly necessary to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is accurate of many borders.
The 1st Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown before long opened. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 one armed bandits and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and sixty six of the normal table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international vacation and hotel building that features a number of comforts aside from the gambling hall, which contains 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty slot machines and eighty eight gaming tables.
